Biomedical Highlights: CAR-T Therapy Sales Soar, Philips Recalls Respiratory Devices

ECHEMI 2024-07-19

The global pharmaceutical industry has recently witnessed a number of compelling developments that demonstrate not only the innovation of the industry, but also the efforts of companies to address market challenges and meet patient needs.

In the field of innovative cancer therapies, biopharmaceutical company Arcus Biosciences' CAR-T therapy sales reached $340 million in the first half of 2022, a jump that fully demonstrates the potential of this personalized approach to treatment. CAR-T therapy is an innovative therapy that uses a patient's own immune cells to attack cancer cells, and its rapid growth in market demand heralds a new era in cancer treatment.

However, the safety of medical devices has also caused widespread concern. Philips recently announced a recall of several ventilator products due to possible malfunctioning of their alarm systems, which could lead to treatment interruption or failure, posing a serious threat to patients with respiratory diseases who rely on these devices. It is worth noting that these problematic products were also sold in the Chinese market, highlighting the urgency of global medical device regulation.

Johnson & Johnson's second-quarter financial report showed a solid performance in the pharmaceutical market. Sales rose 4.3% to $22.447 billion, while adjusted net income rose 1.6% to $6.84 billion. Among them, Carvykti, a CAR-T therapy developed in collaboration with Arcus Biosciences, achieved sales of $186 million, an increase of 81.5% year-over-year, showing its strong momentum in the cancer treatment field. Johnson & Johnson expects sales to reach $88 billion to $88.4 billion by 2024, signaling an optimistic outlook for the future.

In the domestic market, the deal with SKBiopharmaceuticals demonstrates the influence of Chinese companies in global pharmaceutical innovation. The global exclusive rights to its FL-091 radiopharmaceuticals, which targets NTSR1-positive cancers, have been awarded to SKBiopharmaceuticals for a total value of $571.5 million, in a deal that highlights the strength of the Chinese company in new drug discovery and global collaboration.

Together, these events paint a picture of a thriving global pharmaceutical industry, where companies are actively developing new medical solutions to address disease challenges and improve treatment outcomes, while also constantly exploring more effective business models to meet the growing and diverse needs of patients around the world.
