Sumitomo Chemical's new PPO herbicide Epyrifenacil made its debut in Argentina

Sumitomo Chemical's new herbicide Rapidicil (Active ingredient epyrifenacil) and its related crop protection products have been formally registered in Argentina, marking the product's global debut. As the most promising compound in Sumitomo Chemical's A2020 pipeline products, the successful registration of Rapidicil not only demonstrates the company's innovative capabilities in the field of agricultural technology, but also heralds its further expansion in the global agricultural market

Rapidicil, as a PPO inhibitor, is applied folially to achieve superior weed control at low doses. Compared with traditional PPO inhibitors, Rapidicil has rapid and efficient control over a variety of broad-leaved and gramineous weeds. This feature makes Rapidicil particularly suitable for no-till farming, which is gaining worldwide attention as a renewable agricultural practice. Sumitomo Chemical expects to make a positive contribution to soil conservation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality through the promotion of Rapidicil.

Sumitomo Chemical has set a goal of generating 100 billion yen ($652 million) in annual revenue from sales of no-till agricultural herbicides, including Rapidicil. Demand for crop protection products in Argentina, the world's fourth largest market for crop protection products, is expected to continue to grow. Sumitomo Chemical plans to start marketing Rapidicil based products in Argentina in the 2024 planting season and further expand its market share by leveraging its integrated business structure in the South American region with full chain advantages from research to manufacturing and sales.

In addition, Sumitomo Chemical has submitted applications for registration of Rapidicil based herbicides in the United States, Canada and Brazil in 2021, and review processes are currently underway in these countries. With the successful registration in Argentina, Sumitomo Chemical will accelerate the promotion of its Rapidicil based product portfolio in key markets and strive to make Rapidicil a new growth point for the company's agricultural solutions business.

At the same time, Sumitomo Chemical and Bayer's global cooperation will be further deepened, and both parties will continue to work on providing agricultural producers with a new generation of weed control systems. The collaboration will be combined with Bayer's PPO inhibitor resistant crops currently under development to promote innovation and development in agricultural technology.
