Givaudan joins hands with two microbial companies to bet on the fermented raw material track
Last week, Givaudan, the Swiss flavor and fragrance giant, released two major news one after another, both of which involved the company's cooperation with other companies in the development and production of fermentation raw materials. According to a piece of news, Givaudan's long-term cooperation with Manus Bio, a bio-manufacturing company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has yielded fruitful results and obtained a breakthrough raw material, which is expected to start sales in November this year.
As for what the aforementioned breakthroughs and new materials will bring, the wording of the two pieces of news is very vague. It is known that Manus Bio is a raw material company specializing in microbial fermentation technology, which can convert common raw materials into rare natural ingredients. In addition, Givaudan plans to use Gingko Bioworks' technology platform to sustainably cultivate natural raw materials that only exist in small amounts in nature. Gingko Bioworks’ expertise lies in “programming” cells to obtain target products through fermentation.
Another stated that Givaudan has established a partnership with Boston-based microbiological company Ginkgo Bioworks, and the two parties will produce "innovative natural raw materials" through fermentation.
If these raw materials are as rare and breakthrough as Givaudan announced, then the company and its partners will usher in huge benefits.
Manus Bio was founded in 2011 and owns a "biological assembly line cell factory"
(BioAssemblyLine Cell Factory) production process, used to design and manufacture target raw materials. According to a certain issue of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) CEP magazine, this process applies technologies in the fields of metabolic engineering, protein engineering, and systems biology to quickly create relevant strains, and then produce them through fermentation. Target raw materials.
On the basis of the breakthrough raw materials mentioned at the beginning, Givaudan has expanded cooperation with Manus Bio and will develop more new raw materials. Ajikumar Parayil, CEO of Manus Bio, said: "We have reached a milestone and both parties have common expectations for the future. Therefore, we will apply our sustainable bio-manufacturing on a larger scale. Platform to produce a variety of new raw materials."
According to the agreement between the two parties, Manus Bio will receive advance payment in batches depending on the development of raw materials and the arrival of milestones. The company will retain all manufacturing rights, and Givaudan will exclusively sell these raw materials worldwide.
In cooperation with Ginkgo Bioworks, Givaudan hopes to obtain more raw materials produced in a similar way, but not necessarily only for the company's Taste and Wellbeing business. The news released by Givaudan shows that the cooperation between the two parties covers multiple projects, and the number of projects is expected to increase.
Jason Kelly, CEO of Ginkgo Bioworks, said: "In this close cooperation, we will assist Givaudan to produce more sustainable products to replace the rarest and most complex raw materials in nature. To benefit consumers."
The cooperation between Givaudan and the two companies shows that it has made a major bet in cutting-edge biotechnology in order to create new natural raw materials.
At present, in addition to changing the production methods of animal milk products and eggs, the industry is also applying microbial fermentation technology to the production of new proteins and natural sweeteners. But in fact, a large number of other naturally occurring substances can also be obtained through this technology.
