Wanhua Builds A New 850,000-ton/year Polyether Polyol Project

ECHEMI 2021-12-21

01 Basic situation of the project

Project name: Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd. 850,000 tons/year polyether polyol expansion project;

Construction nature: expansion;

Construction site and land area: Wanhua Yantai Industrial Park, Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone, Shandong Province, the original location of the existing special PU area polyether packaging warehouse and the surrounding reserved area, covering an area of 14,850m²;

Project composition: This project will build a new set of 850,000 tons/year 2# polyether polyol device, the product is polyether. Including 120,000 tons/year ordinary flexible foam polyether production line, 120,000 tons/year high resilience polyether production line, 72,000 tons/year differentiated polyether production line, 58,000 tons/year PPG230 polyether production line, 240,000 tons/year Annual POP polyether production line, 240,000 tons/year continuous DMC polyether production line, as well as supporting public works, storage and transportation projects and environmental protection projects.

02 Project construction background

At present, Wanhua Chemical's global production capacity of isocyanate reaches 2.1 million tons, ranking first in the world.

Wanhua’s medium and large customer groups are relatively stable, and the white material market has increased significantly, and customer demand for differentiation is increasing. Wanhua rigid foam polyether needs to continue to explore and provide sufficient equipment capacity and differentiated solutions, and raw materials are directly supplied Affect product properties and restrict the development of new products.

Compared with BASF and Huntsman, the leading global combined polyether companies, Wanhua polyester polyol raw materials rely on outsourcing, and the quality control is not strong. Especially for some high-end polyester raw materials, the procurement cost is high and the procurement is difficult, resulting in Product differentiation is not perfect enough, and production switching capabilities are relatively weak. The increase in polyester polyol production lines can prompt Wanhua to further enhance its competitiveness in the combined polyether market.

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer project

01 Basic situation of the project
Project name: Technical transformation project with an annual output of 25,000 tons of special isocyanate-type high-end thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU);

Construction nature: technological transformation;

Construction site and land occupation: Wanhua Yantai Industrial Park (Yantai Chemical Industrial Park) in Lingang Industrial Zone, Xigang District, Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone, Shandong Province. The new storage tank covers an area of about 500m², which is the existing open space in the installation area.

Project implementation plan: The planned commissioning date is May 2022.

Construction content and scale: Change the 33,000 tons/year MDI TPU production line approved for TPU installations to 25,000 tons/year special isocyanate high-end TPU products and 8,000 tons/year MDI ordinary TPU products, and build corresponding storage facilities. Transportation facilities, other required public works, auxiliary works, etc. all rely on existing facilities.

02 Project construction background

The focus of my country’s future TPU development should be: to strengthen the high-end products of the TPU industry, including fiber-grade TPU, TPU for adhesives, consumer and sporting goods TPU, film-grade TPU, medical-grade TPU, high-temperature TPU, yellowing-resistant TPU and other new special materials. Development efforts, strengthen the development of new application areas of TPU, and improve TPU's independent technological innovation capability, core competitiveness and international competitiveness.

Based on market analysis and forecasting, risk and competitiveness, Wanhua Chemical has conducted comprehensive analysis and research. Based on the raw material advantages of the company’s internal TPU production, it has carried out technical transformations on some production lines in the TPU device to produce higher value-added ADI and TDI type high-end TPU products.

ADI type TPU has excellent yellowing resistance. In recent years, the demand for paint protection film, automotive interior decoration, consumer electronics, hot melt adhesive, glass laminated glue and other fields has grown rapidly.

TDI-type TPU has also been maturely used in the field of special adhesives and has certain growth potential.

This technical transformation plans to transform the existing 31-40# production line of raw material supply unit without changing the production capacity of the related production line. After the transformation, the related production line can produce ADI-type and TDI-type high-end TPU products, taking into account the production of MDI-type ordinary TPU products.

Through the construction of these two projects, it is not difficult for us to see that Wanhua Chemical has a strong sense of worry in terms of risk control and enhancement of product competitiveness.

"Innovation to achieve excellence" is definitely not a simple slogan. It requires companies to continue to use their own efforts to build on the original advantages and then to innovate in production technology.

In the torrent of the times, if you want to become a world-class enterprise, you must continuously improve the space for resource allocation and the efficiency of resource integration on the condition of first-class resource allocation, so as to realize its own strategic goals and strategic positioning.
