What Are the Organic Compounds in Food Additives?
What are the organic compounds in food additives? Well, while synthetic chemicals get widely used in food additives, organic compounds have also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be added to food products. Some of these compounds include carotenoids, which give plants their color. There is also resveratrol, which has antioxidant properties lycopene, found in tomatoes; and citric acid and acetic acid, which are used as preservatives and flavor enhancers. Two Types of Food Additives
To understand what food additives are, it's important to know that there are two types: natural and synthetic. Natural additives include things like sugar, butter and vanilla extract. Synthetic additives include things like artificial coloring and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Because of its complex makeup, it's nearly impossible to tell if a food additive is natural or synthetic based on name alone. Knowing how to identify an organic compound is key when determining whether a food additive falls into either category.
Potassium Sorbate: Organic Compounds in Food Additives
Did you know that Potassium Sorbate is an organic compound in food additives? We use it as a preservative and mold inhibitor, especially to prevent food from going bad at room temperature. It inhibits yeast and bacteria growth by stopping enzyme action needed for life processes. It's also used as a stabilizer in nonalcoholic beverages, ice cream, and baked goods.
In small amounts, it's an antimicrobial agent that prevents spoilage and turns into benzoic acid when metabolized by humans. This gets added to foods with high sugar content (e.g., soda) to preserve flavor and increase shelf life. Calcium Disodium EDTA: we often find this in chewing gum, syrups, jelly, bread crumbs, sausages, cheeses, and breakfast cereals.
Sodium Hexametaphosphate
The main use of sodium hexametaphosphate is as a water softener and emulsifier, but it's also used to preserve foods. The effects of hexametaphosphate on human health and food safety have not been studied, but animal studies show that small amounts don't cause any problems.
Sodium Metasilicate
This substance gets used as an anti-caking agent, an acidity regulator and a dough conditioner. It's considered safe by humans; most animals studies showed no negative effects from exposure. But large doses can have dangerous consequences for those who come into contact with it regularly. CX-5353: This substance falls under US law as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
Studies found that even when large doses were given orally for 28 days or injected for five days, there were no adverse effects in rats. But adverse reactions occurred when rats got exposed through inhalation or skin absorption long term over three years; so keep your exposure short if you can!
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and PEG Derivatives
Polyethylene glycol is a synthetic polymer that's used as an emulsifier and thickener, making it good for preserving shelf life and preventing contamination by microorganisms. It's been classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by FEMA, which means you're likely not going to encounter problems consuming food products containing PEG derivatives.
However, your body may have a harder time processing it than other kinds of organic compounds. This can affect how your body responds to medications or foods with PEGs included in their formulation.
Organic Compounds in Food Additives: Xanthan Gum
A plant-based stabilizer commonly found in salad dressings, peanut butter, ice cream, and other processed foods. Although it's generally regarded as safe to consume, some people with gastrointestinal issues report that it can cause unpleasant side effects like gas and bloating.
This means that if you experience adverse reactions when consuming xanthan gum, avoid it for now. That said, we need more research to establish a connection between xanthan gum consumption and stomach problems.
Citric Acid
A citrus derivative, citric acid is one of food additives that has been proven to aid weight loss. According to Japanese research, citric acid increases muscle mass and exercise performance while reducing body fat. In addition, studies have shown that citric acid helps break down body fat cells, which contributes to its anti-obesity properties.
Another potential benefit of citric acid as a food additive may be because of its mild diuretic properties: increased urination can help flush out water weight and contribute to weight loss.
