Methyl o-toluate is primarily used as a high-value intermediate in pharmaceuticals and chemical industries.
• Pharmaceutical Synthesis Intermediate: This is its most significant application. It serves as a key starting material or intermediate in the synthesis of various drugs. A typical example is its use in the production of the antidepressant doxepin hydrochloride. Through a series of reactions such as halogenation, substitution, and cyclization, it helps construct complex drug molecular frameworks.
• Organic Synthesis and Dye Intermediate: Beyond pharmaceuticals, it is also employed in other organic synthesis processes, where it acts as an intermediate for synthesizing specific dyes.
