1-Methyl-1-phenylhydrazine Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

It is derived from reduction of N-nitrosomethyl aniline. Stir the zinc powder and water into a suspension, slowly add a solution of N-nitrosomethylamine and glacial acetic acid at 10-20°C. After the addition, continue stirring at room temperature for 1 hour. Then heat to 80°C, and filter out unreacted zinc powder while it is hot. After the filtrate is cooled, an excess of 40% sodium hydroxide solution is added to redissolve the precipitated sodium hydroxide. Separate the oil layer, distill under reduced pressure, and collect 106-109°C (1.73kPa) distillate, which is the finished product. The yield is over 50%.
