Mitsubishi Chemical launches new bio-based resins SA916N and SA916F

ECHEMI 2024-02-20

Recently, Mitsubishi Chemical released new biodegradable biopolyester resins SA916N and SA916F. Thanks to Mitsubishi Chemical's proprietary material design and manufacturing technology, the new product's high biomass content of more than 60%, flexibility, high tear strength and excellent processing properties are achieved and can be used in various applications such as food packaging, plastic grocery bags and agricultural mulch. It intends to start sample work in Europe and Japan in January this year, followed by the United States, and promote further technology development.

Just a few days ago, Mitsubishi Chemical also announced that the bio-based engineering plastic DURABIO™ it developed will be used in the production of toothbrush handles of the NISSEI Group. This product is the first toothbrush on the Japanese market to obtain the biomass plastic mark certification. This is the first time DURABIO Plastic™ has been used in a toothbrush.

DURABIO™ is a bioengineered plastic made from the renewable plant-derived raw material isosorbide. It helps reduce consumption of petroleum, a limited non-renewable resource, and also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions because the plants it is made from absorb carbon dioxide as they grow. DU DURABIO™ offers excellent impact and scratch resistance and is being used in a wide range of applications, including automotive interior and exterior components, optical and electronic equipment components, and everyday debris.

DURABIO™ also has an artistic and transparent appearance, making beautiful glass-like designs possible. As a specialty materials group committed to providing innovative solutions, Mitsubishi Chemical Group is committed to providing high value-added products such as DURABIO™ to promote the realization of a sustainable society.
