Cambrex Announces New Peptide Synthesis Manufacturing Technology

ECHEMI 2024-09-30

Cambrex announced that its Snapdragon Chemistry company has developed a new liquid phase peptide synthesis (LPPS) technology that utilizes an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) batch reactor and continuous flow.

This new LPPS technology significantly reduces solvent requirements and the need for excess reagents compared to standard solid-state peptide synthesis processes. The LPPS technology supports peptides up to 12 residues long, using polymeric fragment coupling reactions to assemble larger peptides in the liquid phase. Processes developed using this LPPS technology can be scaled up like traditional small molecules.

In addition to this technology, Cambrex has developed a crystallization screening platform for discovering crystalline forms of peptides and proteins. Crystallization can improve product quality and stability and reduce the need for time-consuming preparative chromatography and lyophilization processes.

"We have invested significantly in R&D of complex synthetics over the past few years, particularly to reduce the economic and environmental impact of producing peptides and oligonucleotides," said Matt Bio, Chief Scientific Officer of the Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO). "Compared to traditional solid phase peptide synthesis, our new LPPS technology offers a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution, significantly reducing solvent usage and allowing for the substitution of sustainable solvents."

"As peptide therapeutics gain clinical and commercial success, it is imperative that we provide industry-leading solutions to develop and scale up peptide drug candidates," said Thomas Loewald, CEO of Cambrex.
