Clariant will promote plastic additives for electric vehicles

ECHEMI 2022-09-28

Clariant announced that it will launch the solution of plastic additives for electric vehicles at the K exhibition held in Germany to help the automobile industry safely increase battery range, improve charging performance, realize material reuse and recycling, and reduce carbon footprint.

Nicola Lelli, Strategic Marketing Director of Clariant Additives, said: "Clariant is working closely with downstream customers in the automotive industry chain to verify its advanced plastic additive technology and promote their attention to weight optimization, sustainability, recyclable materials, carbon dioxide emission reduction, performance and safety needs." Lelli said that Clariant will launch new cooperation with its partners around flame retardants and high-performance additives, support the sustainable transformation of the industry in design and production, and release the development potential of electric vehicles.

Clariant said that the company is strengthening the research and development of sustainable plastic materials for electric vehicles, such as new applications of halogen-free flame retardants in solutions based on polyamide and other thermoplastic materials. This product has little impact on the recyclability of materials, can technically support appropriate vehicle waste management, and is conducive to reducing the carbon footprint. Clariant is building a new flame retardant production base in Daya Bay to meet the rapidly growing needs of China and Asia's electric vehicles, electronic and electrical parts and equipment industries.

In addition, Clariant said that the company participated in a three-year reform project funded by the European Union, aiming to develop light vehicle parts and improve recyclability by promoting the recycling of materials and the use of recycled polymers. The additive team is helping to validate and develop solutions to drive plastic materials beyond current performance and sustainability boundaries, and to help achieve the minimum recycling targets for plastic parts in vehicles under the forthcoming EU legislation.
