Physical Properties

• Appearance: White or colorless crystalline solid. It is commercially available primarily in two forms: anhydrous lithium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH·H₂O).
• Odor: Odorless.
• Melting Point: The anhydrous form melts at approximately 462 °C, while the monohydrate loses its water of crystallization and melts around 410–417 °C.
• Boiling Point: Decomposes before boiling, releasing toxic fumes containing lithium oxides at extremely high temperatures.
• Density: ~1.46 g/cm³ for the anhydrous form; ~1.51 g/cm³ for the monohydrate.
• Solubility: Highly soluble in cold water, with solubility increasing significantly in hot water. It also dissolves readily in ethanol but is practically insoluble in acetone and diethyl ether.

Chemical Properties

• Strong Alkalinity & Corrosiveness: As a strong base, it dissociates completely in water to release hydroxide ions (OH⁻). Its aqueous solutions are highly corrosive and can cause severe tissue damage upon contact with skin or eyes.
• Reactivity with Acids & Gases: It undergoes vigorous, exothermic neutralization reactions with acids to form lithium salts and water. Furthermore, it readily absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air to form lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃). Therefore, it must be stored in tightly sealed containers in a dry environment.
• Thermal Hazards: Non-flammable itself, but reacts exothermically with acids and certain metals. When heated to decomposition, it emits highly toxic fumes containing lithium oxides.
• Toxicity & Irritation: Classified as highly corrosive and toxic. Direct contact causes severe chemical burns, ulceration, and potential blindness if splashed into the eyes. Inhalation of dust severely irritates the respiratory tract and mucous membranes. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory when handling this substance.

Main Applications

• Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing: This is currently the most critical application. High-purity lithium hydroxide is extensively used as a precursor for synthesizing cathode materials, such as nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) ternary materials, which are essential for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems.
• Carbon Dioxide Absorption: Utilized in closed-loop life support systems, such as those in spacecraft, submarines, and rebreathers, to chemically scrub and remove exhaled CO₂ from the air by converting it into solid lithium carbonate and water.
• Ceramics & Glass Industry: Employed as a fluxing agent in the production of specialty glasses and ceramics. It lowers the melting temperature, improves thermal shock resistance, and enhances the durability of the final products.
• Water Treatment & Chemical Synthesis: Used to adjust pH levels in industrial water treatment processes. Additionally, it serves as a versatile reagent in organic synthesis and as a raw material for manufacturing various other lithium compounds and lubricating greases.
