It has become the world's largest energy producer. In 2018, the total energy output reached 3.77 billion tons of standard coal, an increase of 157.8 times over that of 1949, with an average annual growth of 7.6%.

The output of raw coal was only 0.3 billion tons in 1949, 3.68 billion tons in 2018, an increase of 114.0 times over 1949, an average annual growth of 7.1%; the output of crude oil was only 1.2 million tons in 1949, 19 million tons in 2018, an increase of 1574.9 times, an average annual growth of 11.3%; the output of natural gas was only 0.1 billion cubic meters in 1949, 160.27 billion cubic meters in 2018, an increase of 2289.47 times, an average annual increase of 15.7%; the output of electricity was only 43.0 billion tons in 1949. In 2018, it reached 7111.77 billion kilowatt hours, an increase of 1652.9 times, with an average annual growth of 11.3%.
