The global perfume industry is moving towards these trends!

ECHEMI 2020-09-07

According to the latest survey report "Growth Opportunities for Natural Fragrances in Personal Care" by the market research company Frost & Sullivan, consumers are more interested in vegan, organic, and cruelty-free perfumes and other beauty care products. The surge in demand has driven significant growth in the industry.

In addition, the perfume industry has made significant innovations in the development of natural fragrances and renewable ingredients in the past three years.

Monami Dey, a research analyst with technology insights at Frost & Sullivan, said: "The global perfume industry is highly concentrated, and several major multinational companies take the lead in promoting innovation to meet the needs of brands and end consumers."

The sustainable fragrance market has huge potential

As long-term use may cause health hazards, the use of many synthetic fragrance ingredients in the personal care industry faces challenges.

Nowadays, consumers are increasingly inclined to natural and organic products certified by COSMOS, Ecocert and Halal, and the requirements for transparency of ingredient labels have also begun to rise.

This trend has promoted technological innovations in plant extraction, essential oils, biosynthesis, and marine-derived ingredients.

Data from analyst Wunderman Thompson shows that 83% of consumers today are more inclined to choose more sustainable brands, while 70% of consumers say they are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products.

Variety of plant extracts

Plant extracts include lemongrass, cucumber, green tea, aloe vera and other fruit and flower extracts, such as orange blossom, lemon and vanilla, which are widely used in various products such as deodorants and lipsticks.

The increasing trend of problems related to darkening of lips, allergies, reactive skin diseases, the rise of spa and health services, and changes in healthy and safe lifestyles has led to an increase in the demand for plant extracts in personal care applications.

Plant essential oils are widely used

Essential oils are the most commonly used plant-derived natural fragrance materials. Because of their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, essential oils are increasingly used in luxury perfumes, cosmetics and other care products. The growing trend of aromatherapy has also strengthened the importance of essential oils.

Use a small amount of eucalyptus oil, lemongrass oil, camellia and safflower oil to give out a fresh fragrance in lotions, perfumes, detergents and shower gels. When patchouli, cedar wood and cypress are used as moisturizers in hair care products, they can prevent scalp itching and promote hair growth.

Ocean treasure trove to be discovered

Seaweed extract, salmon fluid, marine minerals, seaweed and pearl extracts can be used as active ingredients in personal care fragrance formulations. The growth of anti-aging creams, essences, etc. may drive the demand for sustainable marine ingredients.

These ingredients can be obtained through marine microorganisms using biotechnology, can provide the fragrance of aquatic plants, and help reduce melanin deposition and improve skin tone.

Artificial intelligence accelerates decision making

Dey also added: “Technological innovation is urging companies to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the natural fragrance industry to use digitalization to achieve product development and efficient production. The introduction of AI in perfume development can also quickly provide alternative formulas or ingredients. Recommendations to shorten the decision-making process."
