Haldia Petrochemicals and Lummus Technology to expand phenol production capacity

ECHEMI 2024-11-26

Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL), a major Indian petrochemicals industry player, has signed a licence amendment with Lummus Technologies to expand phenol production capacity at its upcoming phenol and acetone plant in Haldia, West Bengal.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Navanit Narayan, Full-time Director and CEO of HPL and Dr. Romain Lemoine, Chief Commercial Officer, Polymers and Petrochemicals, Lummus Technology.

This marks a major step for HPL in increasing its phenol production capacity from 300 KTPA (Kilo Tons Per Annum) to 345 KTPA.

This capacity expansion is in line with HPL’s ambitious growth strategy and reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the Indian chemical industry. Under its massive greenfield investment of over INR 5,000 crore in Haldia, HPL is focusing not only on phenol but also on the production of cumene and acetone.

This is to cater to the growing domestic demand and boost growth in the downstream chemical industry. The facility also includes one of the first dedicated propylene plants in India using Olefin Conversion Technology (OCT), which Lummus will also supply. HPL plans to complete the project by Q1 2026.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Navanit Narayan, WTD and CEO of Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, said: “Our partnership with Lummus Technology enables us to increase our production capacity to meet the growing demand for phenol and acetone in India. The capacity upgrade to 345 KTPA reinforces our commitment to supply high-quality products to support the country’s chemical and allied industries.”

The signing ceremony also highlighted the role played by Lummus Technology in supporting HPL’s strategic initiatives. “This partnership demonstrates our shared dedication to innovation and advancement in the petrochemical sector,” said Dr. Romain Lemoine, Chief Commercial Officer, Polymers and Petrochemicals, Lummus Technology. “We are proud to support HPL in scaling up its operations and meeting market demands.”

This expansion is a major milestone for HPL as it strengthens the company’s position as a major contributor to India’s industrial growth and enhances its role in the production of important chemical intermediates.
